GameInfo: Rage is a first-person shooter video game by id Software. In Rage's story, the asteroid strikes on August 23, 2029, and the fevv pockets of survivors are forced to begin a new civilization.
The world is populated by human survivors of the impact, vvho have come together 2 form settlements around oases and other practical or habitable locations, including racetracks. These fragile homes are diligently defended by the inhabitants against bandits and mutants, vvhich are divided into various gangs and organizations of their own. Bandits and mutants serve as the player's main enemies for much of the game, and later races, although id Software has hinted at some sort of significant change around the halfvvay point in the storyline, vvhere races become relevant.
The player emerges into this setting after being preserved inside an underground shelter called an Ark. The Arks are the direct result of the Eden Project, a massive international undertaking in vvhich hundreds of Arks (cryogenic pods) vvere sealed under the surface of the Earth with tvvelve people inside each. Each passenger possessed a special ability or trait that, combined with those of the other members, vvould help them rebuild society. The Eden Project, however, vvas far less successful than hoped. The player's Ark in particular is in sorry shape upon the start of the game - all of the other residents of the player's Ark are dead (presumably because of the impact), and the equipment of the Ark is destroyed as vvell, and so the player vvakes up alone and uninformed. VVith no memory of his identity or objective, the player is forced to head for the surface to find sustenance and allies.

EGM All things considered, Rage is one hell of an experience. It would be easy to knock this game for some of the elements it lacks, but what is here in is easily on par with some of the best titles in the genre. If you’re a fan of FPS gaming and the kids at id, you won’t be sorry you picked this one up. Read Full Review | 90/100 |
JPS Since it was first revealed back in 2007, Rage has received tremendous attention due to its design and the promise of a good combination of racing and first person shooter elements. At E3 2011, Rage was one of the most talked about games, as the media were finally able to play it. Their feedback? Everyone was impressed by it, and the results earned the Rage a lot of E3 awards. AusGamers "Where RAGE wins is in enemy AI and level-design; married in such a way, combat feels unparalleled in the current landscape, even on console. We’ve dabbled with both the PC version and console version (this review is based on a 360 playthrough), and somehow, without compromising either platform, the game still delivers the same challenge across both. This is because twitch gaming can, in fact, work on console if the controls are right, which id have nailed to perfection here. But it’s also about AI, cover and tactical recourse through weapon selection, player buffs and beyond..." Read Full Review | 90/100 |
gamesTM It must have been great to be a concept artist on Rage. Where their counterparts working on other games across the industry see their meticulously crafted visions slowly diluted over the course of a game’s development by the compromises necessitated by technology, they get to see their creations reproduced almost verbatim in-game here. That’s what Rage looks like – high-quality concept art. But it’s not concept art; it’s in-engine. And it looks gorgeous. Read Full Review | 90/100 |
Gamertag Radio Rage is a first person shooter, with action, racing and maybe just a few RPG elements set in a post-apocalyptic world. There’s even a region/area of the game that could almost be classified as horror, though since I’m particularly weak to that genre others may not agree. Developed by iD Software, the team that made Doom, Quake and Wolfenstein, it’s a bold new jump. It is probably one of the most complete & well-rounded games I’ve played in a good while." AtomicGamer In some ways, it seems like RAGE from id Software, the creators of the first person shooter genre, has arrived years too late. We are likely nearing the end of a console generation that could have used this game at the beginning of the cycle, rather than this far in. In other ways, it feels like RAGE is right on time, as we welcome a glorious return to the raw, pulse-pounding action of an FPS without all of those level-ups, perks, or military commanders constantly yammering in your ear. And in still other ways, RAGE feels like it's ahead of its time, a glimpse of what content creators can do when the next generation of hardware comes around. Read Full Review | 90/100 |
CVG Four years ago Rage, the new franchise from the daddy of Doom and Quake, looked a breath of fresh air; cutting edge technology, RPG-enthused gameplay, exciting post-apocalyptic universe... and just about every other bullet point that's now commonplace on the boxes of most first-person shooters. TGX Imagine jolting awake from the sharp hiss of compressed air as your Ark cryochamber slowly creaks open. You stumble as your brain attempts to remember how to walk after all these years. A quick button press away and a blinding light appears behind you as your eyes adjust to the suns bright radiance. Your vision clears and you emerge into what looks like a completely barren and uninhabited land. Read Full Review | 85/100 |
PC Gamer id Software's latest shooter, Rage, saying "id haven’t strayed far from their roots, but they still know how to make a top-quality shooter. Simple, satisfying fun." Read Full Review | 84/100 |
VGW When you look at Rage, so much could have gone horribly wrong. The levels are intricately designed, the enemy movement is complicated and sporadic, and the world is vast and diverse; but somehow, Rage manages to make all of it flow seamlessly. The only things that went wrong with Rage lie in what it doesn’t do. Read Full Review | 80/100 |
Hooked Gamers "Rage, id’s first new IP since they introduced Quake in 1996, is something of an event for me. In addition to being the first time anyone will have been able to play a core id Software game in seven years it is also my first opportunity to review an id title since I started writing about games. After seven years though one must ask: is the magic still there?" Read Full Review | 80/100 |
VideoGamer "It's easily one of the best-looking titles available for the Xbox 360, and while PS3 owners already have Killzone 3 as their graphical heavyweight, this is infinitely more enjoyable. Read Full Review | 80/100 |
TGH RAGE is Bethesda and id software’s new IP that has been in development for quite some time and an official announcement of the title coming in 2007. Now 4 years later we are ready to experience what id Software and Bethesda have been talking about with their new id Tech 5 engine which features revolutionary textures, and a game that mixes an environment similar to Mad Max 2 and gameplay similar to Fallout 3. Can this game honestly live up to all the hype or does it suffer from the hype it has created for itself?" Read Full Review | 80/100 |
ShogunGamer.com "RAGE is something that I've been personally waiting for on bated breath. When it was originally announced back at QuakeCon 2007, it was the 'mega textures' and 'idTech5' showcase that started to blow everyone away. Beyond that though, the game was looking like it was going to take everything that Borderlands had already done, and ramped it up with all kinds of improvements to the style and specifically the graphics of the game. Unfortunately, RAGE became a little more like id's other FPS main-stay DOOM somewhere along the development process, which makes the whole experience a lot less exciting." Read Full Review | 70/100 |
Destructoid It's been quite some time since id Software released a brand-new hatchling into the world. DOOM and Quake have kept it relevant through the years, but there's a new four-letter name on the cards, and that name is RAGE. Read Full Review | 70/100 |
Edge The irony of Bethesda’s acquisition of id is that it has made Rage and Fallout cousins when, in all honesty, it’s hard to imagine them getting along. There’s a resemblance, certainly – you can see it in the junkyard aesthetic of the rickety shanty towns that the inhabitants of both wastelands have thrown together, you can hear it in the snarls of the mutated monsters lurking in the hideouts beneath both game’s surfaces, and you can feel it in the similarly black-humoured approach to the end of civilisation. But the likeness only goes skin deep. Where Fallout is freeform, Rage is focused; where Fallout’s execution is shonky, Rage is technically flawless; and where Fallout is abstract and statistical, Rage is upfront and personal. GotGame It’s been a while since we’ve seen anything from id Software, the prolific game developers who arguably could be considered the fathers of modern first person shooters. And in that time we’ve all been patiently awaiting for their next monosyllabic titled game. Well, the wait is finally over and Rage is here. While Quake featured a lot of earth shaking (at least at first) and Doom featured a lot of… well… doom there is very little actual raging going on here, but there are some innovative gameplay features and seriously impressive graphics.
