The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Reviews and more

Based on 12 critics - Overal Score: 96 / 100

GameInfo: Skyrim is not a direct sequel to Oblivion, but a new chapter in the Elder Scrolls series, set 200 years after the events of Oblivion. In the preamble to Skyrim, the Empire began ceding territory to the Elven nations it once ruled, because there was no heir to the Emperor's throne. The Blades had no one to defend, and gradually died, were murdered, or secluded themselves from the rest of the world. After the king of Skyrim was assassinated, a civil war broke out amongst the native Nord race – the majority being those who wished for Skyrim to secede from the Empire, and the rest being those who wished for Skyrim to stay in the Empire.

As with previous Elder Scrolls games, Skyrim begins with the player character as an unknown prisoner, on the way to their own execution for involvement with the Stormcloaks, the group founded by the king's assassin.
According to leaked gameplay, as your character is about to be beheaded, a dragon comes, destroying the town where your execution is taking place. The player eventually learns that Skyrim's civil war is last in a sequence of prophetic events foretold by the Elder Scrolls, which also foretell of the return of Alduin, the Nordic god of destruction. Taking the form of a gigantic dragon, Alduin is prophesied to consume the world with his servants, the Jills (a race of black dragons). The player character is the last Doväkiin (Dragonborn), a dragon hunter anointed by the gods to help fend off the threat Alduin poses to Skyrim and Tamriel. Aiding the player is Esbern (voiced by Max von Sydow), one of the last Blades.

STN: Some say that single player games have had their day, making way for the ability to jump online and take it to your friends. Thankfully, Skyrim has not forgotten its roots, offering a single player adventure which is just as epic in scale as it is in nature. The lone adventurer can rest easy, because there is no better way to spend time on your own than to spend it with Skyrim. Read Full Review

The Escapist: An absolutely first-rate roleplaying game that combines an abundance of content with an abundance of quality. The outdated design elements are unfortunate but not so distracting that it ruins the depth of the story, the openness of the setting, or the visceral joys of combat. Read Full Review

VideoGameWriters: The Elder Scrolls is still the pinnacle of open-world RPG experiences and Skyrim feels like the magnum opus in a series that has spanned nearly 20 years. In a release season that is so desperately trying to vie for your attention, it should be at the top of your list. Read Full Review

Attack of the Fanboy: At the beginning of this review I posed the question of whether The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim lived up to the hype or not, and I believe that answer is an unequivocal and emphatic, yes! The core changes that were made to the franchise, like the revamped graphics and combat systems, were probably enough to seal the deal in the case for this being the studio's best work. Fortunately, the developers didn't stop there. Read Full Review

Gameindustry: After spending around 40 hours on Skyrim I still feel I've only scratched the surface of this game. With its beautiful and deep world I know, I'll be spending a lot more time in Skyrim and I easily expect to pass over the 200 hour mark that I achieved in Oblivion. Read Full Review

Gamerockers: The game opens in beautiful foggy forest scenery showcasing early the work Bethesda have put into Skyrim's graphics and textures. I must admit I was instantly impressed, it was a nice change from Oblivion (which I started many times)as that started in a ugly looking cell with not much to look at other than the guy in the cell across from you. Continuing Bethesda's trend though, if you're not crawling out of a vault or arriving on a boat you start as a prisoner and Skyrim is no different. Read Full Review

IGN: It's difficult to ever feel completely satisfied with a play session of Skyrim. There's always one more pressing quest, one more unexplored tract of land, one more skill to increase, one more butterfly to catch. It's a mesmerizing game that draws you into an finely crafted fictional space packed with content that consistently surprises. The changes made since Oblivion are many, and result in a more focused and sensible style of play, where the effects of every decision are easily seen. Featuring the same kind of thrilling freedom of choice The Elder Scrolls series is known for along with beautiful visuals and a stirring soundtrack, playing Skyrim is a rare kind of intensely personal, deeply rewarding experience, and one of the best role-playing games yet produced. RPG Site: With Skyrim Bethesda have truly succeeded in crafting not a sandbox, but a world. It's a world that's more exciting to live and play in than any other they've created. It's a game where the world is the greatest character of all, reigning supreme over all others. Skyrim's world is beautiful.

That, combined with exciting gameplay, open-ended character development and engaging story threads is all it takes to be truly great - but it all starts with the world. From that, through that, the game itself is beautiful too. Read Full Review

CVG: What do you do first? When you emerge from the gloom of the opening dungeon and see Skyrim stretching out before you, it's the first decision you have to make. You've heard that you can find work in the nearby town of Riverwood, but that's just a suggestion. You can go anywhere and do anything. The world is yours. Read Full Review

GameZone: The fact of the matter is, Skyrim is amazing. As an open world where you can truly live out your fantasy life and as a technological marvel, it impresses on almost every level. The few graphical bugs you might encounter shouldn't deter you from what is this years most anticipated game. Bottom line is...you need it. Period. Read Full Review
